Because 1 lie always leads to another. The devil is a liar and so are his follower. Telling the truth will prevent you from guilt and hurting other, but sometimes you are not aware if you had hurt someone. Telling someone a lie can also mean that they will lose your trust. In this world everyone would feel better if they could trust someone. Lying is a sin because God loves us and would never tell us lies because telling us the truth only, shows that he believes in us to be able to handle the truth and that he cares that we get the facts right.
God's definition of sin is found in I John 3:4: "...Sin is the transgression of the Law."

The "Law" is the Ten Commandments, of which "bearing false witness" (or lying) is number nine.

The Bible tells us that God's Word IS TRUTH, which is the source of Eternal Life. So, lying, which is the opposite of Truth, is the source of DEATH.

Jesus tells us that Satan was the first to sin (to break God's Laws)... that he is the FATHER of LIES (John 8:44).

The breaking, or disobedience, to any of God's Commandments requires the penalty of DEATH!

Lying is disrespectful to GOD, first of all... disrespectful to Him and to our fellowman. TRUTH is paramount with our Creator, and lying is a cause for many of this world's woes... along with murder, theft, disloyalty, uttering God's name in a vain manner, profaning the Sabbath day, and worshipping false God's that we make with our hands; whatever it may be, is absolutely abominable (disgusting) to God
