Mercury thermometres aren't used much, because the mercury inside is poisones,
But the reason that mercury used to be used is because Mercury expands rapidly, conserning the temperature e.g. if it gets hotter, the Mercury expands, so there is more of it. So, when you're measuring the tempurature, you're actually measuring how much mercury is there, therefore telling you what the temperature.
Mercury.
To measure temperature.
Alcohol thermometres are used to measure very low temperatures (upto -112 degree celsius).
Alcohol thermometers are typically used in households for measuring body temperature. Mercury thermometers are used in industrial and laboratory settings for their accuracy and wide temperature range. However, environmentally-friendly alternatives are encouraged due to the toxicity of mercury.
"IR thermometres are quick and easy to use for babies. They are very accurate when used correctly, and can be easier to use than the traditional methods. On the other hand, IR thermometres are often much more expensive than traditional types as well."
Alcohol can be used in some thermometers due the fact of its very low freezing point. It may be used in cold atmospheres such as freezers. It however would not be suitable in vey hot atmostpheres due to the boiling point.

Zinc is used in the reduction of mercury by forming an amalgam with mercury, which allows the mercury to be easily separated from other materials. This process helps to extract and purify mercury from its ores.
