Very interesting question. Why isn't cookies spelled like cookys? Or rookies spelled like rookys? Some questions just can't be answered..Will anyone else volunteer and answer this question?
In Standard English the rule for the words ending in 'y' is as follows:
1. Final 'y' preceded by a consonant changes into 'i' and then 'es' or ed' is added to it.
baby-babies, try- tries, tried, fry- fries, fried, fly- flies.
2. Final 'y' preceded by a vowel does not change into i'
boy-boys, monkey-monkeys, say-says,
There may be some exception.
