The mordant increases the affinity of cellular components for a dye. Therefore, the mordant allows the silver nitrate to attach strongly to the flagella, so that we can see them under a light microscope.

Some bacteria have flagella for motility. Their width is below the resolving power of the microscope so they cannot be seen in a light microscope. Flagella can be visualized if they are dyed with a special stain that precipitates on them, making them appear much thicker.

What cells contain flagella?

They are found in cilia. Cilias are found in eukaryotic cells.

How do plant cells use flagella?

Well the flagella works as a propeller to help the cells move. However plant cells dont actually have flagella or cilia because they dont need to move. Some plants (bryophytes?) have motile sperm that have flagella. Also, only prokaryotic flagella work like propellers. Eukaryotic flagella whip back and forth rather than rotating.

How do humans use flagella?

The flagella are on bacteria but are also on a man's sperm. Not only does it help the bacteria move but it also helps the sperm move. Inorder to have a baby you first need to have a egg fertilized in a woman. The sperm from a man cannot get to fertilize the egg without the flagella helping them to move. Without the flagella we will not be able to repopulate.

Why do you need to stain specimens?

Staining allows you to better visualize the parts of the tissues.

Are flagella found in plant cells?

Flagella are not cells - they are extensions of cells that render the cell motile. (Think of it as a tail of some sort.) Sperms have flagella and other unicellular organisms such as paramecium and other organisms such as bacteria have flagella too. It isn't common for plant cells to have flagella.

Bacteria might need to move around in their environment, so they have structures called ______ which resemble tails?

flagella

Why do animal and plant cells lack cilia flagella or other means of locomotion?

Cillia and flagella are used for motility. Most cells of animals and plants do not need to be mobile, but small uni-cellular or organisms of few cells do. But it is not true that animal cells do not have cillia and flagella. Sperm need to be motile so they have flagella. Your lungs need to clear dust and small particles from them so they have cillia.
