Mountains and valleys serve as symbolic representations of the highs and lows in Esperanza's life journey. They represent the challenges she faces, growth she experiences, and resilience she develops throughout the story. Additionally, the imagery of mountains and valleys highlights the contrast between her privileged past and humble present, emphasizing the themes of hardship and perseverance.
