Like all the Apollo astronauts, Armstrong was aware of the risks in the programme. Internally, NASA estimated the chance of success as 50% and that they were going beyond the chance of any rescue.
One of astronauts said that it did cross their minds that everything had been built by the lowest bidder.
Balanced against that was Armstrong's determination to land on the Moon. He was able to keep calm despite of the risks.
