Neon is a chemically inert gas. An atom of neon will not combine with other atoms to produce chemical compounds. This means that it really serves no known biological function.

Neon does have scientific and commercial uses, the best known of which is in neon lights for advertising. It is also used in vacuum tubes, television tubes, and lasers, among other things.
