New Zealand is a country by itself. It is not part of any other country or continent. It is a completely autonomous, self-governing country, however is under the British Crown, due to the Waitangi Treaty signed in 1840, which decleared New Zealand a British Colony.

Yes, but we are independent. BUT it has been called The Commonwealth for some time.

Several members were never British Colonies. And (obviously) a number of republics do not consider Queen Elizabeth as head of state, though she is regarded as the leader of The Commonwealth.

The Commonwealth Games are a conspicuous activity, but there are wide ranging activities in education, health and so on.

It is just The Commonwealth now, the British bit has been dropped. Many of the old colonies/territories belong, but not all, and there are some members who were never part of the pink empire. Queen Elizabeth II is nominal head of State of 16 of the 53 members.

Because it chooses to belong is the short answer.

No country has to belong to The Commonwealth, and a few countries that never were a British colony have joined, and several have left.
