There are two reasons why the Old Harry rocks are so named, the most popular is that they are named after Harry Paye, a smuggler, pirate and privateer who lived in Poole in Tudor times, the other is that they are named after a legend that stated that the Devil, also sometimes known as Old Harry, used to sleep there sometimes. Unfortunately, because of the passage of time it is impossible to be certain which of these legends is the true origin of the name.
It seems probable that there may be elements of both stories that have carried forward to the present day

2. Erosion continued until the cave went right through the headland to make an arch.
3. Eventually the roof of the arch collapsed into the sea to leave a stack - Old Harry.

One night old harry went out in his boat and his wife was in the pub. Old Harry's wife was drunk and was walking out along the stacks and fell off and died. Along came old harry in his boat and because there was no lamp he crashed his boat in to a millions of pieces and he died to. So that is how Old Harry the stack got its name.
How old is Old Harry Rocks?
The Old Harry Rocks are part of a chalk band that is around 65 million years old. But the rock band has only been submerged by the sea in the last few thousand years. The current rocks known as Old Harry and his wife are a few centuries old, with Harry's original "wife" having collapsed in 1509. The 65Ma event was the KT Boundary, the end of the Cretaceous during which the chalk was formed. The subsequent uplift that formed the uplands from that Chalk was in the Tertiary, which followed the Cretaceous. The stacks themselves are no more than thousands of years old, as the Dorset coast retreated by marine erosion in the sea-level rise following the last Ice Age. The Old Harry rocks are simply stacks left by erosion of the chalk cliff in Purbeck, which extends under the sea all the way to the Needles on the Isle of Wight.
