Ireland wanted Independence from the UK and after many years of campaigning and fighting a treaty was negotiated with the British Government and Irish envoys in 1921. It was enacted after ratification in 1922 founding the Irish Free State (later to become the Irish Republic/Eire). As part of the negotiations "Northern Ireland" (or the 6 counties in the North - predominantly Protestant out of 9 counties of Ulster) were allowed to exercise an option to withdraw from the State and remain part of the UK and did so. The Catholic minority in the North have continued to want unification with the South leading to the "Troubles" and the terrorist problems which largely (but not wholly) ended with the peace process and the Good Friday agreement.
