In English, many words have double meanings. Historically, "calf" was documented as referring to the back of the lower leg around the years 1350 and 1425. It comes from the old Norse word "Kalfi." Calf is also used to refer to muscles in the lower leg.

Calf was used to refer to the young of cows and some other mammals before the year 900. It comes from W. Gmc "kalam."

So, though they come from different countries at different times, the words both were translated into "calf" in the English language.
