Nitrogen and oxygen absorb UV-C (and more energetic light), but nothing significantly less energetic. Ozone absorbs UV-B that ordinary oxygen, nitrogen and other constituents of the atmosphere cannot. Our skin and hair are transparent to UV-B, but our DNA is not. UV-B can directly attack the DNA in our bodies (and the DNA in plants and animals of all sorts) and cause mutation, cancer, and reduction in crop yields. Ozone allows us and our other companions on Earth's surface to live and thrive.

The Sun's UV-B gets through better when there is less ozone. The *lack* of sunlight causes the ozone hole, and the temperature of the ozone layer is a really weak player. The size of the ozone hole (there will always be a hole at the pole having winter, the size is the variable) and more UV-B arriving at Earth's surface are both symptoms of less ozone.
The ozone layer affect life on earth is a few ways. The main it affects the life on earth is UVB radiation.
