Matoaka, nicknamed Pocahontas, which translates to spoiled child, has her place in historical myth. She is important to remember more for a lesson in how History gets changed to suit the times and how people's lives become larger than they really were. Hers is just one of many tragic tales of the native american. She was only about 10, possibly 11 when John Smith came to spend time with her tribe. He was apparently treated very well. Pocahontas was imprisoned at 17 and only released on her promise to marry John Rolfe. She had one son and died at the young age of 21. It was only upon her death and after several years, that John Smith fabricated several different versions of how Pocahontas saved his life.
