Well, pop art started off as a new kind of art but grew into many things. For example many new-day designs for advertising and clothes, etc. Roy Liechtenstein and Andy Warhol wanted to use the world as it was, on the surface, not deep or emotional or existential as the Abstract expressionist painters did. They presented in their art things like: Eg, The Coke Bottle, Advertisements on TV, billboards, food, clothes, etc. So Pop art meant philosophical an acceptance of the world as the world showed itself without any more thinking or critic or analysis.
Read also the quotes by Warhol and Liechtenstein on this matter, with the links.
This quote of Warhol is a very illustrating one!
"The farther west we drove (to California, fall of 1963) the more Pop everything looked on the highways. Suddenly we all felt like insiders because even though Pop was everywhere - that was the thing about it, most people still took it for granted, whereas we were dazzled by it - to us, it was the new Art. Once you 'got' Pop, you could never see a sign the same way again. And once you thought Pop, you could never see America the same way again. The moment you label something, you take a step - I mean, you can never go back again to seeing it unlabeled. We were seeing the future and we knew it for sure… …the mystery was gone, but the amazement was just starting.
from 'POPism'; as quoted in "Warhol in his own words - Untitled Statements ( 1963 - 1987)", selected by Neil Printz, in 'Andy Warhol, retrospective', Art and Bullfinch Press / Little Brown, 1989, pp. 457 - 467
Before Pop Art, paintings were made of people or places. The goal was to make it very life-like and as beautiful as possible. When Pop Art emerged, it took aspects out of daily life (such as commercials, commercial products and comic books) and started painting those.
The best book about Pop-Art and its history is "Pop Art Portraits". It tells you about the history of the style, while putting it in the context of the events in the world at the time.
It practically destroyed art.
It was, in a way, a celebration of post World War 2 consumerism and a rejection of Abstract Expressionism. The expressionist's spiritual or psychological content was rejected and a move towards an ironic look at life and a spatial flatness happened in the work. Pop actually stands for popular culture, which provided the subject matter. The term was coined by a critic in the February 1958 issue of 'Architectural Design'. Precedents for Pop Art were movements like Dada and Nouveau Realism.
Pop Art came after the war and advertising was not bold and colourful. Artists such as Andy Warhol and Roy Lichenstein wanted to make advertising bright and cheerful so they painted everyday things in bright colours.
OR
Things that were being advertised were in bright and colourful packaging and artists such as.... were inspired by this and put that into their art.
I think it's the second one but I don't know.
When pop art first makes an appearance in the art world in the late 1950's early 1960's, particularly in New York City, it is thought of by the art world as a lesser, more lighthearted cousin of the serious introverted Abstract Expressionism movement. Many of the artists we associate with the movement Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenburg, etc. did their best to distance themselves from Pop Art icons Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein who were embracing popular images from advertising and comic books and incorporating these images (sometimes copying them directly) into their art. Pop Art was a movement for the everyman. You did not need to understand anything about the history of art to recognize a soap box or Mickey Mouse. It was art for the consumer age.
