Adolescence is a time of rebellion and self-preservation. Rock music is driven by Guitars, distortion and heavy drums which transmit an enormous amount of power to a rebellious teen looking to defy the norms imposed by society or by his/her entourage. The lyrics are often very powerful as well, and the look that rock musicians adopt is original and defies the status-quo. Teens choose rock stars as role models to find their own identity and their own originality, which are all defining factors of self-preservation and independence. It should be emphasized, however, that these same messages are transmitted through other types of music, especially rap and hip hop. These genres are also very popular among teens.

If that isn't the most fun question to answer in all the world. Rock and roll is and has always been about what people love the best: freedom. Whether you're talking about a rock and roll lifestyle of partying, staying up late, growing out your hair, and rebelling against just about anything you can think of; or if you just like the lyrics and music. Rockers from the blues-dripping, devil-driven likes of Robert Johnson, and Jimmy Page, to the all out rebellious likes of ACDC, Rage Against the Machine, and even the softer rockers like Collective Soul and Fleetwood Mac all have one thing in common: the freedom to sing about whatever the hell they want. They take all of the things people hate or love about life and turn them into something creative and inspiring. Rock is all about being free, standing your ground, enjoying the little things, loving the person you're with, sticking it to the government, or just blowing off a little steam. Rock can match any mood and can be about absolutely anything. With a style of music so diverse and beloved, the question would be more effectively phrased as "how could you not like rock music?"

Perhaps you are thinking of segregation. It would be difficult to make a connection to slavery, since slavery occurred up to the 1860s, at which time, President Lincoln ended it and ordered that the slaves be emancipated. Rock and roll came along in the 1950s, when there was still segregation. That is why rock music was so controversial in its early years-- it helped to change society by bringing together black teens and white teens; plus some of the popular rock groups were integrated, and others were all black... yet white teens loved their music. The "mixing of the races" was especially controversial in the deep south, and in many cities, politicians tried to have rock banned.
