The significance of rusting for the availability of iron can have an economic impact. The shipping industry have to spend extra money on zinc and other measure to decrease the spread of rust and extend the work life of their ships.

Chemically speaking, rust is Hydrogen Oxide. Which can be useful in several applications. I can't think of any off the top of my head, but I think it was or can be used to make bombs or some sort of flammable substance.

rust is nothing but it's addition of oxygen to metal

in case of iron: the iron oxide is less stable than iron

in case of alluminum: the aluminium oxide act as protective layer over alluminum....

hence we won't require any protective method.
