The basis of marriage in many religions is to reproduce and propagate. Since homosexuals cannot produce offspring when engaging in intercourse, many religions believe this is abnormal and contrary to natural law.
That being said, the tradition and principle of marriage has changed. It is no longer about reproducing but also about love. In this way, there is nothing wrong about two people (regardless of gender) loving one another.
Not all Christian sects ascribe to that view. Unitarians for example and to some extent the Anglican Church (England),Mormons, the Friends although accepting of homosexuality in general, are divided on the issue of marriage,as are the Episcopalians. Most Christian religions will not recognize the validity of same-sex unions. Many accept gays as members, but will advocate a chaste life.
To expound on the previous answer:
Same-sex romance/marriage is considered a sin in The Bible. The reason being that God created romance and procreation to be between one man and one woman (who are married). He set the boundaries for our sakes, not to be unfair.
He didn't create full grown 40-something year old men to be with 8 year olds romantically (even if it isn't perverted, just a loving romantic relationship) because of physical and mental restrictions. Same thing with same-sex relationships.
To say though that it's "forbidden" is incorrect. It's considered wrong and a sin but you can choose to do it. God doesn't hate you for it but know that you are choosing to put a separation between you and Him.
No. There is no consensus on same-sex marriage in Christianity. Many Christian churches permit same-sex marriage. The majority of the members of several Christian denominations that do NOT permit same-sex marriage nevertheless support it. Same-sex marriage is also not mentioned in the Christian Scriptures and, therefore, any opinion relating to same-sex marriage is based on someone's personal interpretation of scripture.
There is no consensus on the acceptance of same-sex marriage by Christian denominations. Some accept it while many do not. Where it is accepted, it is accepted because church leadership has enacted a resolution to accept it. Where it is not accepted, it is not accepted because church leadership has not enacted a resolution to accept it.
Because the bible says that homosexuality is wrong.
