Why is sobriety a lifelong commitment?

The reason that sobriety is a lifelong commitment is because sobriety itself has very little to do with the act of drinking. Additionally, that's why there's a big difference between being dry and being sober. Sobriety means a total change in lifestyle, living on spiritual principles, reduction of ego and self, and service to others. If this isn't maintained, more often than not the alcoholic will eventually drink again.
