Severe depression may or may not be a contributory factor in suicide. Suicide is a complex, multifaceted human behaviour that emanates (See Shneidman, 1985) from a combination of psychache (=unbearable psychological pain) and lethality (= the likelihood that a person will die by suicide in the immediate future). Some forms of depression ("clinical depression") as diagnosed by a medical practitioner are considered to enhance the risk of suicidal behaviour. In such cases medication, or in an extreme case, hospitalisation is recommended for safety reasons.
However it is not possible to predict whether any particular individual will or will not die by suicide (see Pokorny, 1993). It is this unknown that makes suicidal behaviour one of the most complex of all human activities.
If you think you are becoming 'depressed' and having suicidal thoughts, you should find a compassionate, qualified person - not necessarily a professional - who will listen to you as you explain - for them and for yourself - the underlying reasons for your negative emotional feelings. This may be the beginning of your healing journey back to good health.
