In the US, you get 3 months off. (If you're a teacher, you also get 3 months off.)
I recall being told that it goes back to the days when the children in a family where needed to help with crops and such, in the winter when there wasn't much to do around the farm or ranch the went to school. That custom is still followed, although there are year round schools and home schooling that do not follow the practice.
We get three months off in Ireland as well!
