Because it is. Just like nearly all other stars the sun is a ball of superheated gas composed mostly of hydrogen with with thermonuclear reactions at its core converting hydrogen into helium to produce heat and light. The only reason the sun appears different from other stars is that it is over 250,000 times closer to us than any other star.
