There are hazards associated with the sun. It is a source of energetic particles (mostly protons), and if it wasn't for the earth's magnetic field, we'd get "showered" by them. Certainly it supplies light we need, but the higher energy rays, the ultraviolet, or UV, rays can be a problem if we endure long exposure. skin cancer is a real threat. And under certain conditions, the planet can experience "excessive" warming. This "warming" will significantly alter climates worldwide (global climate change), and plant and animal life will change dramatically because of this. But the sun is a source of energy for life on earth. If the sun went dark, the earth would cool and freeze solid. The only remaining life would be simple forms (animals and plants) entombed in the frozen oceans and ice sheets that would form over the globe. All complex life would be destroyed, as freezing forms ice in cells, and the ice crystals tear through cell walls and kill the cells.
