Thanksgiving Day commemorates the settling of the Pilgrims at Plymouth, Massachusetts, and the success of their first harvest. It was clear after this harvest - and the large meal that followed - that it would be possible to survive in this new world. Since then, Thanksgiving has become a day to remember the things in life that people are thankful for.

George Washington made Thanksgiving an official American holiday in 1789, but the date was not standardized until Abraham Lincoln passed the law in 1863.
