The 1871 Indian Head Cent, with a mintage of 3,929,500, is considered a key date because there are only 3 other cents with lower mintages in the series. The famous 1877 cent with a mintage of 852,500, the 1908-S cent with a mintage of 1,115,000 and the 1909-S cent with a mintage of 309,000 are all considered key dates of the Indian Head Cents.
