Not all Australian Coins are considered to be valuable, just some.

Not including Proof coins, bullion coins and other non-circulating coins made from precious metals, the most valuable Australian general circulation coins (all now withdrawn) in no particular order are -

  1. 1930 Penny
  2. 1923 Halfpenny
  3. 1915 (H) Florin (Two Shillings)
  4. 1920 Penny (no dots on reverse)
  5. 1925 Penny
  6. 1915 (H) Shilling
  7. 1912 Florin
  8. 1913 Florin
  9. 1914 (H) Florin
  10. 1932 Florin
  11. 1933 Florin
Any of these coins should get $10,000 AUD or more in mint uncirculated condition.

It should be noted that you are very unlikely to see any mint uncirculated examples of these coins outside a museum or the collections of very wealthy collectors.

The (H) is a very small mintmark, usually on the reverse, indicating that the coin was struck at the Heaton Mint in Birmingham, England.

Currently, there are no spectacularly valuable Australian decimal coins, but that may change in 50 or 100 years.

There were only ever 3,000 1930 Australian Pennies minted. Of those, it is estimated that 1,500 have survived and are trading in today's market.

A 1930 Australian Penny in any condition would be quite valuable.

They are classified as rare.

The 1930 Proof Penny is the really valuable coin. There were only 6 made. A few years ago, the owner of one of them declined an offer of $1,000,000 AUD.

All years of issue of these coins are potentially still in circulation so, unless they are part of a Proof or Uncirculated mint set or are individual Proof or Uncirculated coins and in absolute mint condition, they are worth 10 cents.

No Australian 10 cent coin could be considered valuable, even in mint condition.

The only way you might get a valuable Australian 10 cent coin is if you find one with a genuine minting error.

How much is a copy of a 1930 penny worth?

A copy of an Australian 1930 penny is worth nothing, unless you can put a price on accommodation and meals at one of the finer prisons for passing off forgeries. There are a large number of fakes and forgeries being hawked as genuine, so if you are considering purchasing an Australian 1930 penny of any grade, please be certain that you are purchasing the genuine article and have it authenticated by a reputable coin dealer.

What is the misprint on the penny that makes iut so valuable?

On the 1969 S penny a doubling of the print makes it very valuable ($35 000)

Are there replica 1930 Australian Penny's?

Yes there are. There are replicas made of many rare coins and they should have something on them that indicates they are a legal copy or replica as distinct from a forgery. This is one reason why it is so important to have any valuable coin you might be considering, checked and authenticated by a reputable coin dealer. Replica Pennies go for a few Dollars.

How do you know what markings to look for on a 1939 Australian Penny?

There are no mintmarks on a 1939 Australian Penny. There were all minted at the Melbourne Mint. The designers initials for the obverse (HP - Thomas Humphrey Paget) are below the King's neck and above the "M". The designers initials for the reverse (KG - George Kruger Gray) are above the Kangaroo's tail.

Where is the mintmark on a 1948 Australian Penny?

The 1922 Australian Penny has no mintmark. Actual mintages were Melbourne - 9,529,440 and Perth - 3,168,000. Identical dies were used so the issuing mint for a particular 1922 Penny cannot be determined.

What is an Australian Penny?

It depends on how much money you have to spend on a hobby. Australian Pennies were minted from 1911 to 1964, so there are not too many of them and if you do not set your goals too high, you should be able to manage a respectable collection of Australian Pennies without much trouble. The fact that they were minted for 54 years does not mean that there are only 54 different Pennies. There were no Australian Pennies minted in 1937 or 1954. In other years, Pennies were minted in more than one place, and sometimes overseas, so there are two or more slightly different versions of the same coin in some years. The Australian 1930 Penny is one of the rarest coins in the world, the 1925 and 1946 Pennies are not quite as rare, and one version of the 1920 Penny is also rare, so it is very possible that you may never have one of these in your collection. Australian Pennies should be a coppery brown in colour and they will all have AUSTRALIA stamped on them. The design should be clear and well defined with no, or very little wear, the printing should be easily read and there should be no dents or scratches. Have fun.

What does a 1930 Australian Halfpenny look like?

A 1918 Australian Penny was the same, except for the date, as all Australian pennies from 1911 to 1936. On the Obverse was King George V with a beard, wearing robes and the crown. Around the edge of the Obverse were the words "GEORGIVS V D.G.BRITT OMN: REX F.D.IND: IMP:". Around the edge of the Reverse were the words "COMMONWEALTH OF AUSTRALIA" with the year at the bottom. There was a ring in from the edge. Inside the ring were the words "ONE PENNY" with a small scroll above and below the words. The only other difference was any mint marks that might have been added. The 1918 Penny had an "I" under the lower scroll indicating that they were minted in the Calcutta mint in India. All Australian pennies had the following dimensions and metal composition - 97% copper, 2.5% zinc and 0.5% tin. They had a plain edge, weighed 9.45 grams and were 30.8 mm in diameter. There were 1.2 million minted. See the link below.

Why is a 1945 penny worth so much?

Old coins are valuable because they're old and rare. The 1945 penny isn't worth remarkably more than other coins of its approximate age (in fact, it's worth a lot less than a 1944 steel penny, or a 1943 copper penny, both of which are extremely rare).

What is the value of Australian 1893 half penny?

Australia did not strike any halfpennies until 1911, so the coin you're referring to is most likely English.

Why is there a hole drilled at the top of a 1927 and 1938 Australian penny?

No circulating Australian coin has ever been minted that includes a hole in the design. If your coins have holes in them, somebody put them there so that the coins could be worn as a pendant or similar.
