Best Answer

Gubernatorial (and other state government) races are especially important in 2010 because it's a census year. The state governments that take power after this year's elections will be in charge of drawing the new districts for the House of Representatives and will therefore have a huge amount of power over the partisan balance in the House for the next ten years.
