ATX technology is related to the SMPS in which when the user shutdowns the PC, there will be power supplied to the motherboard until the mains are removed. Thus ATX technology helps in remote start up of PC whereas this is not possible with AT technology where the power is totally not supplied to the motherboard when PC is in shutdown state

Is there any difference in the consumption of electricity by using two sizes of power supply for example a 350watt power supply and a 480watt power supply with all else being the same on the comp?

The computer will only consume what power it needs. No diffference. if you have a 350watt power supply, and it is using more then 70% power consuption, the life of that power supply will be short, so always aim big when picking out a power supply, ie: 50-100 watts more than what you would actually need.

When you require dc source it is preferable to use a dc power supply instead of a battery why?

It depends on where the power source is needed. In portable equipment for starting engines or portable equipment like cordless saws, drills, or lights a battery is the preferred method of power. In indoor stationary charging equipment for portable phones for example a continuous supply of AC power being converted to DC is more convenient than have batteries around the home that have to be charged when running low on voltage.

Can you use a power supply with more amps and not fry the unit?

you will need to be allot more specific on what you are trying to do here. what is the difference in amps. what is the device Generally speaking it is good practice to only use the power supply that the device is rated for. the biggest issue you will have is this Power = voltage * current (simple version) if the power supply you had was 12v at 1 amps then you ca supply 12Watts of power if the power supply you had was 12v at 10 amps then you can supply 120Watts of power Just because you can supply 10 amps, and all you need is one, means your power supply is bigger than it needs to be. The device will draw what it is intended to draw. Just make sure the voltage matches.

What is the minimum amount of power supply when a PC uses 225 watts while booting but175 watts when running?

Personally, I wouldn't use less than a 300 Watt power supply in that situation. But then, I never use less than a 500 Watt power supply when replacing a power supply or building a computer. The advantage is, the larger power supply can easily handle the load and will not run as hot. Since electronic components typically fail more rapidly when they get hot, the larger power supply will usually last much longer. But that's just a suggestion.

Where can someone find more information about universal power supply?

How far can AC-DC converter output volts- amps can diverge from input device volts -amps in other words Is it safe to use a 30V 0.5a ac-dc converter with a 30v 0.83A printer?

It is okay sometimes to use a power supply that allows for more amps than your device. You have a good chance of burning up your converter because the printer wants more amps than the power supply can give. A sample survey may be preferable than a census because it can be more comprehensive. While its research only involves a subset, it is typically more accurate.

Why is it important to buy a power supply that's close to the rquirments for your system instead of buying a higher wattage power supply?

Its not, having a 700w PSU and only using 200w is perfectly fine. Its fine to have more power available than you actually draw.
