Best Answer

because they were both colonised by the british

Answer

Because they share similar origins (British), cultures and shared histories. The current NZ flag actually predates the Australian flag and may have inspired those who designed the Australian flag, although the dates of their official adoption were close together (1901-1902).

Why is the New Zealand flag similar to Australia's flag?

Quite simple (1) The NZ flag does not have the "Commonwealth Star" which is an integral part of the Australian flag (this is the six pointed star to represent the six founding states plus Australia's territories, located under the Union Jack) (2) The NZ flag has the Southern Cross coloured red with white borders(rather than white on the Aussie flag) (3) The Southern Cross on the NZ flag only has four five-pointed stars (rather than five on the Aussie - four with seven points and one with five) (Typo on original answer incorrectly said the stars on the Aussie flag were blue - they are of course white

When did the Australian flag become the official flag?

The current Australian flag was design in 1900 for a British overseas possession and for that purpose it was perfectly valid . But today Australia is a completely separate country in its own right ( see Australia Acts 1986 ) . The flag should indicate our current status - not what we once were .

Why did the US choose a flag so similar to Britain's?

The Americans really wanted Saints' Crosses on their flag so they copied the British flag.

What does the Union Jack stand for on australian flag?

The union jack on the Australian Flag is from the first white people to settle on our land, the British. The British flag is JUST the union jack, so, to celebrate the people who first settled in Australia, we have their flag in part of OUR flag. Hope that helps :)

What design is at the top left corner of the nz flag?

The British Union. It is commonly referred to as the "Union Jack" but technically that name applies only when a flag of that design is flown from the jack staff at the bow of a ship. When flown on land it is called the Union Flag. When flown at sea you can be in trouble because only the Royal Navy may fly the Union Flag or Union Jack at sea. Private citizens are not allowed to do so; their yachts must fly the Red Ensign.

Was Australia allowed to go to the 1980 Olympics?

Yes, Australian athletes were allowed to compete in the 1980 Summer Games in Moscow although they did so under the Olympic flag and not the Australian flag. Australian athletes won 9 medals (2 gold, 2 silver, 5 bronze) at the 1980 Summer Games.

Where can you buy havaianas with the Australian flag on them?

They do not sell Havanas with the Australian flag on them because they're Brazilian. You may see flag on them, but they're fake. Hi, When in Australia I saw (and purchased) Havaianas with the Australian flag on them, all of the large department stores in Sydney had them so I doubt they were fake, seemed real enough to me and I have several pairs! They were full price and sold in reputable clothing shops. I was gutted when I had to throw them away and have been searching for a new pair since.
