It was decisive. Yes, it was. And what made it important was that the US Carrier Fleet was able to overcome the challenge of the Japanese in the Pacific. The Japanese navy was extremely powerful and had they been able to dominate the skies over the ocean then their Battleships could have been brought to bear, but if the US was dominant in the sky then this would neutralise the power of the Japanese fleet. The Japanese had shown very directly the power of the bomber over unescorted battleships by sinking HMS Prince of Wales & HMS Repulse, 2 of Britains front line Battleships.
