The reason it is so important to Christians is because all Christians believe Jesus was the son of God and that he sacrificed his life for ours, so having Jesus their, people feel that they should go and worship/see him because of what he did for us.

There are many statues of Christ but you are probably referring to the Christus statue.When looking at it I think that the artist who created such a beautiul statue left it up to the individual as to how they felt when looking at it. As for myself I see Christ as a loving father who is inviting me to come and be enfolded in His all forgiving arms. He is silently saying "Come my son and I will give you peace and rest. I am all forgiving and all compassionate. Let me wipe away your sins so that you may feel the warmth of my embrace. Feel the prints in my hands and feet and know that I am the Christ.
