If The Bible is merely the work of a number of men over the period of centuries that it took to write, there must always be doubts as to how much of it is true, or even whether it is true at all. The answer to this problem was to define the Bible as inspired by God, which, when understood literally, means that the Bible is infallibly true and without error.

Because the Bible can easily be shown to be historically unreliable, many theologians prefer to consider the Bible spiritually true even if not always historically true. Of course, this undermines the very notion of the Bible as divinely inspired.
