The Eiffel Tower is painted in three shades of brown -- darker at the bottom and lighter at the top. It is claimed that this scheme best highlights the shape of the tower against the backdrop of the Paris sky.

Nice idea, but no.
The tower is repainted every seven years (last time beginning 2009), and the process takes a year. Gustave Eiffel specified from the start that the colour should be lighter at the top than at the bottom. In 1889 it was Venice Red, which was the colour of the anti-rust coating applied in the workshops before the tower's assembly. At the next painting it becvame orange-brown, then yellow ochre, and finally in 1907 Eiffel chose a yellowish brown which is designed to harmonise with the stone and tiles of Parisian buildings, and to make the tower look like bronze under floodlighting. The colour is officially Eiffel Tower Brown, and is trademarked as such. It is produced by Stelma, a company specialising in marine metallic paints.
