There are two ways to look at this question. One way is the metaphysical; the other is scientific.
The universe consists of particles with mass. According to Newton's law of universal gravity, all particles with mass experience an attractive force with all other massive particles. The particles in the early universe clumped together with others close by to form stars and their planetary systems. These 'super particles' - the stars - are gravitationally attracted to each other to form galaxies. Stars and galaxies and galactic clusters and other formations of the universe have interesting and complex structures, which astronomers try to understand by applying the laws of physics to data obtain through astronomical observations.
That is the scientific answer. The metaphysical answer is less precise and less certain, but just as interesting. Maybe the galaxy is here to display God's infinite creative power to us human beings. Maybe the galaxy is here because it was a necessary condition for God, the ultimate Scientist, to create us in the physical universe as we know it. Maybe there is no real reason for the galaxy to be here, except for a previous poster's suggestion:
