Because Superman is the arguably the greatest of all superheros. The "S," epitomizes strength, virility, and alpha maleness. To have a tattoo or a piece a clothing bearing this symbol shows and tells the world under no uncertain terms, that you are, "sh*t," and you have the upmost of confidence of yourself and your abilities in whatever endeavour you're under taking. It's a subtle sign of arrogance. To paraphrase the opening monologue to "The Adventures of Superman," you believe, if only for a moment, that you have "powers and abilities far beyond those of mortal men."
