When decimal currency was introduced in 1971, the weight of the 2 New Pence coin was set at twice that of the New Penny.

Since there is very little difference between the thickness of the coins, in order to meet the weight requirement, the coin has to be significantly broader.

Original New Penny coin - Weight: 3.56g (Which was also twice the weight of the Half New Penny).

Original 2 New Pence coin - Weight: 7.12g.

What year was the British 50 New Pence coin introduced?

It depends on what question you are asking: When was a coin with the denomination of Two Pence first used in Britain? -- The silver Two Pence (or Half Groat) coin was used in Britain as far back as 1351 as a circulating coin, and continues to this day as a part of the four-coin Maundy Money set. When was the large copper Two Pence coin minted? -- The "Cartwheel" Two Pence (so called because at about two inches in diameter, close to a quarter inch thick, and weighing the better part of two ounces, it was almost as big as a cart's wheel) was produced only for a single year in 1797. It was found to be too large and heavy for daily use and was quickly eliminated. When was the currently circulating decimal Two Pence coin first issued? -- The first of the decimal coinage in Britain (100 pence to the Pound, as compared to the old Lsd [Pounds-Shillings-Pence] system) were produced in 1968 - they were 5 and 10 Pence coins. The first Two Pence coin was not produced until 1971 - it was called Two New Pence from 1971 through 1981, and Two Pence from 1982 onward.

What is the value of an 1854 US one pence coin?

The US has never denominated coins in pence, only cents. And in any case "pence" is plural so no coin would show the denomination "one pence". If by any chance you have a large copper coin about the size of a half dollar with the words ONE CENT on the back, you have what's called a Large Cent. Please see the Related Question for more information.

You have two coins which add up to 55 pence one of them is not a 5 pence what are the coins?

This could not be done, unless one of them is not a 50p, but the other is, so 50p and a 5p.

What is the value of a two pence coin with words new pence?

The date is on the coin's obverse side, but even without that fact, the wording NEW PENCE instead of just PENCE indicates it was minted some time between 1971 and 1981, following the transition to full decimal coinage. Assuming the coin was found in change, it's a very common circulation piece so it has no added value above 2 pence. If the two pence coin that says NEW PENCE, and it is from 1983, then it could be worth up to £600.

Why was there no 1986 British 20 pence coin minted?

The Royal Mint considered that there were sufficient coins in circulation already, so no 1986 general circulation 20 Pence coin was struck. There were Proof coins and Royal Mint sets produced containing a 1986 20 Pence coin.

On a British 2 Pence coin does it say New Pence or New Penny?

Pence is the plural of Penny, so you have One Penny or, Two Pence, Five Pence, Fifty Pence, etc. From the introduction of British decimal coins in 1968, the new currency was designated as "New", ie. 1 New Penny, 2 New Pence, etc. until 1981. From 1982 onwards, the "New" was dropped.

The worth of a commonwealth 1986 two pound coin?

A British 1986 Two Pence coin (Proof FDC), could fetch up to £1 GBP. A reputable coin dealer will be able to give a more accurate valuation. These coins are still potentially in circulation so, unless they are part of a Proof or uncirculated mint set or are individual Proof or uncirculated coins and in absolute mint condition, they are worth Two Pence.

What is 1951 battle of Britain coin worth?

There was no "Battle of Britain" 50 Pence coin issued. Perhaps you refer to the 1994 "50th Anniversary of the Normandy Landing (D-Day)" 50 Pence coin. I have to point out that as I type this I have a "Battle of Britain 1940" fifty pence coin in my hand, so either I have a forged coin or Mr Lewis is incorrect in his assertion that no such coin exists.

What is The smallest number of coins that will total exactly 19.95?
