Because the US produces more agricultural stuff than any other country. Even countries larger than the US in area do not match our output. Just ask any Russian or Chinese citizen who starved to death under communism. California alone probably produces more agricultural output than all but four or five countries. Mechanized, scientific, large scale farming on huge farms is the only way to go - say what you will about Farm-Aid and Willie and all, but there ain't no way that Mom and Pop can grow enough corn and wheat to feed all of us, not to mention half the rest of the world.
