The US has a representative democracy because, at the time the Constitution was framed, it was impracticable to have a direct democracy. Additionally, the Founding Fathers were generally skeptical of democracies (since they understood it differently than we did) and feared the tyranny of the majority. They believed a representative democracy would temper the passions of the masses.
Because of the the United States shear size and population, it would be chaos trying to take into account over 300 million peoples different ideas and opinions, which would effectively cripple the nations ability to function politically.
How long do you think it would take to decide anything if every decision needed the majority of 300,000,000 votes????? A true democracy would be impractical in such a large nation.

Direct democracy does not exist in the US. The US exercises indirect democracy, which means that the people elect representatives, such as congressmen, senators, governors, and the president. It is these people who handle legislation. Direct democracy means that the people vote on bills themselves (directly). Instances of direct democracy were found only in the ancient world.
