The choice of which portraits and pictures appear on US currency is partly artistic and partly political.

In the absence of Congressional legislation (sometimes seen as meddling ! ) requiring a specific image, the decision is made by officials at the Treasury Department. While the process is often opaque to those of us in the general public, the goal in most cases is to honor a person, place, or event that's significant in American history. Certainly Independence Hall, the Capitol Building, the Treasury, and the White House are among the most recognizably American buildings.
