In my opinion the modern Olympic Games are fairer, however some ways that the Ancient could be considered fairer than the Modern Olympics are:

  • The very minute use of banned substances compared with today (i.e performance or bodily function enhancing drugs).
  • Banned substances and methods were practically unheard of, therefor promoting professionalism over amateurism. This keeps the competition at a fairer and higher standard.
  • They were always held in the same location, Olympia Greece. An example of how this can impact is Bob Beamon, who shattered the long jump record when at the 1968 Mexico Olympics. Due to the high altitude and thinner air, Beamon would have not jumped as far in a city closer to sea level.

But the Modern Olympics is probably fairer though:

  • Technology is being increasingly use to determine the exact distance or height the particular athlete jumped/the speed which they ran etc. Close races in ancient times would have purely been decided through adjudication.
  • (Something for the ladies!) Women were not allowed to compete in the ancient games.
  • Even worse still, women were not even allowed to Watch the ancient olympic games!
  • More countries can be involved, and since the ancient Olympics were held only in Athens, this means that only European countries could even think of participating. It was mainly only Greek Athletes.
  • The Ancient Olympics had only one "winner" for all events, whilst today gold medals in a variety of events represent multiple "winners"
  • They never had an Ancient Winter Olympics in Olympia, because the Mediterranean Sea and the area around it is warm for almost all of the year.a
