because blacks belived in a one and only god then and now and they knew that the lord would lead them to freedom. if you haven't heard "follow the drinking gourd" that song was made for african americans so that when the night comes the north star was thre and if you follow the north star it would take you to notrh even now it will. what im trying to say is that the north was where they took them from and where they were trying to get to.(this answer was made by diamond campbell a13yr old that attends summit internation uplift shcool. and will answer more questions just put a D at the end).
