More than likely, the stop pad has fallen or broken off.

You can't, if your check engine light is on, try disconnecting the negative or ground wire on the battery for 5 minutes, if the light is still on with the car started and running, you will have to get it checked by your favorite mechanic...
probably a wiring short... half the 1988-1991 Toyota corollas still on the road seem to do that.
check high mount brake wiring from trunk...
ive put in brake fuild oil toped that up checked the battery level all ok still the battery light and hand brake light are still on...

Is it the parking brake light or the ABS light? is it red light or amber?
The transit brake warning light, on a Ford, can be reset by changing the brake pads. If the warning light is still on after changing the brake pads remove the fuse for 10 seconds.
