Georgia, 408 US 238 (1972).Gregg was sentenced to die in the electric chair, but he and three other inmates escaped from prison on July 29, 1980, the night before his scheduled execution. Ironically, Gregg was beaten to death later that night in a barroom brawl in North Carolina.
