Halogens are elements in the 17th group on the Periodic Table of Elements. The name comes from old french nomelclature of the greek roots halas (salt) and gen (the generate). These are elements that produce a salt when bonded to a metal.
'Halo-' means salt and '-gen' comes from genisis, meaning 'the forming agent': so, putting them together it means that they are 'salt forming'.
The most common salt: sodium Chloride, NaCl, is made from the salt forming element Chlorine, the second of the halogen group.
Other halogenides: NaF (a Fluoride), NH4Br(a Bromide), KI (an Iodide)
The word "halogen" is from Greek words meaning "salt" and "maker." Every type of salt contains a halogen, as common table salt (sodium chloride) contains chlorine.
************2nd Opinion *****************
How about saying many types of salts contain halogens? Metallic sulfates, nitrates, carbonates, acetates, and many more are also salts.
The name halogen is derived from the Greek language: able to produce compounds like to sea-salts (hals + gen).
--------------------------------------
The name halogen comes from the Greek words "halos"=salt and "genos"=produced by; halogens can produce salts, halogenides.
The term was introduced by Berzelius.
It comes from Greek words meaning "salt former", because the elements form salts in combination with metals.
A halogen is a gas, such as iodine or bromine. Halogen bulbs contain a small amount of halogen gas. For more information, see the related links, below.
They are called chalcogens because they are ore forming elements as a large number of metal ores exist as oxides or sulphides

Halogens Apex ;)
Group 7 on the periodic table is called Halogens.
halogens
The common name for group seven non-metals is Halogens. The non-metals in the group are Fluorine, Chlorine, bromine and iodine.
The elements in this group are known as the halogen group

Halogens!! :D its the most reactive nonmetal and has 7 valence electrons!

When halogens form ions, they are called halide ions. These types of ions have a negative charge due to gaining electrons.
