Megabus does have costs associated with it that are much lower than other agencies that typically have more real estate, more employees, and more overhead. The megabus pricing model is also cheap because it is structured on supply and demand. Rather than charging full price for a nearly empty bus, they use lower prices to entice more customers away from competitors. A full bus generates more revenue than an empty bus, no matter how much they charge.
It is not currently possible to make this trip via megabus because: 1) Bronx does not have a megabus stop. (Manhattan does) 2) Chicago and New York are, as of 2011, considered separate hubs that have no possible connections made via any megabus line or combination of routes.
