The cello and all instruments of the violin family are not varnished or colored because the left hand is constantly moving up and down it's length. The wood is sealed but the left hand rubs against the neck adding oils from the hand from constant use. This keeps the area smooth and relatively friction free to allow the hand to move over the area easily.
At first it could be uncomfortable, but I don't think the cello should hurt a back or neck if you hold it right.
The sizes are a quarter, a half size, a 3 quarter size, and a full size. you can tell which is your size because you should be able to touch the neck of the cello to your neck while sitting with the end pin about halfway out.
A violin is a much higher pitched instrument than the Cello. Also, the violin is played while supporting it with your neck and shoulder while the Cello is played upright, similar to a bass.
A cello looks like a large violin. It is usually a deep brown or red, but also can be a light orange. The bow of a cello is a long narrow stick of wood, which is fastened to the the horse hairs which you move across the cello's strings to make a sound. The cello has a long neck and is played with you knees bent so they are visible on either side of the cello. Cellos make amazingly beautiful sounds, and are quiet beautiful them selfs! =)
For a right handed person:The violin is held with the left hand on the neck with the base of it being positioned under your chin. You then hold the bow in your right hand. The cello sits on the ground with the base being positioned between your legs. Your left hand is on the neck for fingering the notes and your right hand holds the bow.

A traditional cello has a spruce top, with maple for the back, sides, and neck. Other woods, such as poplar or willow, are sometimes used for the back and sides. Less expensive cellos frequently have tops and backs made of laminated wood.
