If you didn't have a nervous system, you would die in seconds, basically, the nervous system works like this. Your brain sends nerotransmitter signals to your heart telling it to pump. These signals are lights speed, which means that you can run fast when you want because the transmitters are sending signal VERY fast. I hoped this cleared up some!
