Why is the ocean the best location for tyring to drill through earth's crust to the mantle?

There is no easy answer to this question. The place where the crust is thinnest is under the ocean, where it is formed. Yet it is not easy to get equipment down there in the first place to start drilling. We have tried plenty of times to drill through the crust, but we can only make it a few kilometres before the pressure and properties of the rock make it extremely expensive to continue the drilling.
In summary, on land, it is easier to get the equipment to the drill site, but the crust is significantly thicker at these points. Underwater, the crust is thinner, but the operation itself is very costly. Neither is easy at all. However, given the advances of technology, it will possibly be easier underwater to achieve the depth required, but currently neither is economically viable.

∙ 14y agoBecause the crust is thinner under the ocean. There is less overlying rock to drill through, although this advantage is offset somewhat by the greater difficulty of drilling at sea.
