Why is the periodic table in groups?

The periodic table is grouped because of their chacteristics. They have similarities and differences, of course. Groups are also known as families or groups of the same characteristics.Periods, on the other hand, are the rows of the periodic table, containing atoms of similar atomic number.

At a more fundamental level, the elements are grouped by the number of electrons in the "outer shell", i.e. the highest energy level in which electrons sit within the atom. These energy levels are themselves subdivided into orbitals, as represented by the different "blocks" of the periodic table. For example:Strontium (Sr) has 38 electrons. These are arranged into five main energy levels, or shells (Period 5). The outer of these shells contains two electrons (Group 2) which lie in the S-subshell (S block).
