They're not "switching covers", there is an Australian version (The original), and then there is an American version. The Australian editions all have pictures of real people on the cover, but the American editions have drawings/paintings. It's kind of weird. There are some differences in the Australian edition, but mostly just spelling. The plot-lines don't change at all.

I'm not sure about a movie series, but there will be arleast one movie.
The Ranger's Apprentice series is about Will, a small orphan child, who wants to become a knight. However, certain circumstances change when instead he becomes a Ranger, which is the land of Araluen's 'police'. The series is about his apprenticeship, his missions, his lover Alyss and all the wild and wonderful people he meets. The author, John Flanagan, is also writing another series, the Brotherband chronicles, which takes place simultaneously to Ranger's Apprentice but is situated in Skandia.
It is out already, so is the tenth book.
Book five is the "Sorcerer of the North."
