The small intestine has many villi, small projections into the lumen of the small intestine. These villi increase the surface area of the small intestine, and increase the funcitonal area for the absorbtion of nutrients.

The intestine has a small lumen so its diffusion pathway for a drug in solution is short. The intestine also has villi and microilli which provide a large surface area for drug absorption. It is coated with mesenteric blood vessels which help to main a concentration gradient between the lumen and the blood.
